Study Shows that Vigra helps to treat Menstrual Pains
It has revolutionised sex lives around the world and now researchers say Viagra may have another use - relieving period pain.
Women with moderate to severe cramps who took the drug as a pessary reported less pain, American scientists found.
This is because it boosted blood flow to the pelvic region, they say.
Viagra works by elevating the levels of the chemical that causes the tissues in the body to relax, improving blood flow.
The effects on erectile function were discovered accidentally - it was originally developed to improve blood supply to the heart in angina sufferers.
The researchers in the new study, from the Penn State College of Medicine, say one of the most popular treatments, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen, don't work well for all women.
Used often - as they are by women who frequently suffer period pain - they can also cause stomach ulcers and kidney damage.
But when the drug, also known as sildenafil, was administered as a vaginal pessary, side effects such as this didn't occur. Previous research has examined the effects of women taking Viagra tablets for period pain - but they caused headaches.
The study involved 25 women aged between 18 to 35 who suffered from moderate to severe period pain. Some received the Viagra, the others a placebo.
Patients rated their pain over four consecutive hours and reported that the Viagra pessary relieved pain, with no side effects.
'If future studies confirm these findings, sildenafil [Viagra] may become a treatment option for patients,' said Richard Legro, professor of obstetrics and gynecology and public health sciences at Penn Srate University.
HOW DOES VIAGRA WORK?
Viagra helps by elevating the levels of the chemical that causes the tissues in the body to relax, improving blood flow.

However its effect on the arteries can also have negative effects: patients who take the drug may suffer from flushed skin. It can also cause headaches and nausea.
