A young Indonesian copywriter died over the weekend after working 30 hours straight.
Mita Diran, a 24-year-old Young & Rubicam Indonesia copywriter, collapsed at work and later died at a local hospital. She suffered heart failure and slipped into a coma.
On December 14, Diran tweeted, “30 hours of working and still going strooong,”Hours later, Diran collapsed. She died the next day. Diran’s father continued to give updates about his daughter’s condition on social media.
Diran regularly vented on Twitter and Tumblr about working long hours for her employer. In October she tweeted, “The more you spend time at the office, the more you consider moving your bed here.” Another tweet, “Alright, one full week of going home past 2am from the office. Ladies and gentlemen, I believe we just broke a record.”
While cause of death has not been released, local reports blamed her death on long work hours, lack of sleep, and the heavy consumption of energy drinks. Diran allegedly drank Krating Daeng, which is also known as “Thai Red Bull.’
Y&R, which hired Diran back in May of 2012, has since released the following statement:
